The Top Shelf

Pen and pale wash on white paper. An elderly woman with a grey bun stands on an old kitchen chair, reaching for a vermilion tin on the top shelf, the only red thing. Her grown son is drawn enormously tall: his head is level with the tin, he could take it in a second, but he bends down and holds the chair steady instead, smiling at her.

She wanted to reach it herself.

He could have reached it in a second.

He held the chair instead.

I draw everything at the size it feels, not the size it is.

Tell me a small moment from your life. I’ll show you what it really looks like. Leave it as a comment on my Instagram or reply to the letter.
