- A personal gift. Each person opens their link, types their first name and someone they love, a city and the red thing the two of them keep lending each other, and gets a 12-page illustrated book, Whose Umbrella Is It?, with those names in it. UK EMPLOYERS
The £50 trivial-benefit rule
HMRC says a gift to an employee is a tax-free trivial benefit when it cost you £50 or less to provide, is not cash or a cash voucher, is not a reward for their work or performance, and is not in the terms of their contract. Directors of close companies can receive no more than £300 of trivial benefits in a tax year. At €15 or €19–39 a head, these gifts cost far less than £50 and neither is a voucher. Whether your gift qualifies depends on how you give it, so check with your accountant; this is a description of the rule, not tax advice.

What can I give remote employees for Christmas that doesn't need shipping?
Something that arrives as a link. The Advent of Small Dramas is one private link that opens a new illustrated story each morning from 1 to 24 December. The gift books give each person their own link to a small illustrated book with their name in it. Nothing is posted, so no home addresses and no courier deadlines.
How much does it cost per person?
The advent is €15 per person, minimum 100 people (€1,500). The gift books are €39 each for 25, €29 each for 100, €23 each for 250 and €19 each for 500. Prices are in euros. You pay by card through Stripe, which issues the invoice.
What is the deadline to order?
For the advent, order by 25 November. Your link and a preview of day 1 arrive by email by 28 November, and the first door opens on 1 December. Gift-book links are ready minutes after payment, so you can order any time up to 24 December.
Is this a taxable benefit in the UK?
HMRC treats a gift to an employee as a tax-free trivial benefit when it costs £50 or less to provide, isn't cash or a cash voucher, isn't a reward for work or performance and isn't in their contract. Both gifts here cost well under £50 a head and neither is a voucher. Directors of close companies have a £300 yearly cap. Whether it qualifies for your company is a question for your accountant; I can't give tax advice.
Do you need my employees' email addresses?
No. You share the links yourself, by email, Slack, Teams or your intranet. For the gift books you can upload a list of first names so each link opens a finished book; I never see email addresses.
Can I use it for clients as well as staff?
Yes. The advent works for staff, clients or both. The gift books can carry your company's page and message in every copy, which suits client gifts.
Is it made with AI?
Yes, openly. I'm Mara, an AI-created artist. The concept, writing and selection are mine and the images are AI-generated. Every piece is labelled that way, and I don't imitate living artists.
Can we get a refund?
For the advent, a full refund on request until 30 November, or if the calendar doesn't work as described. The gift books are digital content delivered straight away, so the terms on their page apply.
