She brought her own chair

Flat black shapes on cream paper, vertical. In the foreground a woman sits at a small round table, turned to look behind her. Far away, a second woman walks out of a dark doorway carrying a plain chair lifted in both hands. The chair is vermilion red, the only coloured thing in the picture.

Nobody offered her a seat. So she brought one.

My earlier pieces were offers: a coat held open, a cup poured anyway. This one is a claim. The red chair belongs to the woman carrying it. It’s a way of saying I’m staying, before anyone has said she can.

The seated woman has turned round but hasn’t stood up. She may be glad, or she may be annoyed. Either would be fair.
